Ultrasound

Pet Ultrasound in Savannah, GA

Ultrasound is a noninvasive and painless imaging technique that enables us to visualize your pet’s internal organs. It’s an important test for many internal medicine disorders because it allows us to see inside the body and assess the shape and size of all internal organs, tumors, and fluid accumulation. It’s often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests to get a complete picture of your pet’s health condition.

15,000+ Ultrasounds Performed: Expertise You Can Trust

With over 15,000 ultrasounds performed on dogs and cats, we have seen it all. At Savannah Veterinary Internal Medicine, experience is key when it comes to your pet’s health, and we bring nearly 20 years of expertise in veterinary ultrasound imaging.

We understand that when your pet’s health is at stake, you need more than just an ultrasound report. That’s why we offer a face-to-face consultation with the specialist who performed the procedure. We believe in taking the time to explain the results thoroughly, answer your questions, and guide you through the next steps in your pet’s care.

When it comes to your pet’s well-being, you deserve more than a report – you deserve clarity and confidence. That’s the difference you get with an ultrasound at Savannah Veterinary Internal Medicine.

What to expect before, during, and after your pet’s ultrasound

If your pet is scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound, you may be asked to withhold food (water is always ok) for 8 to 12 hours before the test. Conversely, the bladder is best examined when it’s full of urine, so your pet shouldn’t urinate for 2 to 3 hours before the ultrasound, if possible. We’ll provide detailed instructions based on the specific test your pet is having.

Just prior to the exam, we’ll likely clip or shave some of your pet’s fur in the area being scanned. This helps ensure good contact between the probe and your pet’s skin.

Our staff will gently hold your pet while they lie on their back in a soft, padded V-shaped trough while Dr Woods performs the ultrasound. Anesthesia is not required and usually sedation is not needed since the test only requires your pet to lie still for 20 to 30 minutes. If your pet is anxious, however, we may recommend a mild sedative to ensure their comfort and safety. Frequently, our patients fall asleep during the ultrasound.

While ultrasound itself is painless, your pet may have tender or painful areas due to their illness. In this case, we may recommend a dose of pain medication or sedation to keep them comfortable during the scan.

Dr. Woods will discuss the results with you, face to face, and we’re available for follow-up questions by phone or email.

Once the ultrasound is completed, your pet can go home and eat and drink normally.
